- Keep it Clean
Windows 7 comes with some clean-up tools that allow you to chuck out the old unnecessary files that eat up your system space, slowing it down. To speed up Windows 7 by clearing all redundant files, open My Computer and right-click on the C: drive and select the Properties option from the appearing menu.
Now, a new dialog box will pop up. Under the General tab, click on the Disk Cleanup button and let Windows examine your C: drive. Once done, a list of file types will display. It’s safe to check the box next to each entry and then click on the Ok button to delete them.
- Check for Hard Drive Errors
Once you’re in the Properties dialog box for your hard drive, click on the Tools tab. Next, tap on the Check Now button to scan your drive for errors, degrading your system performance. Check the box that reads Automatically fix file system errors to improve PC performance.
- Defrag Your Hard Drives
Defragmenting hard drives can also help you speed up slow computer. Hard drives become fragmented with continuous use, distributing parts of files across the drive. Eventually, it takes a while to find and assemble when those files are needed. That’s where, defragmenting comes in.
In the hard drive Properties dialog box, you’ll find a Defragment Now button under the Tools tab. Simply click on the said button to start the defrag process. It can take some time but you can continue using your PC while it’s running.
- Turn off Search Indexing
Windows 7 comes with the ability to index everything on your hard drive, making it quicker to find when you’re looking for something. In case your computer’s performance has become poor or you don’t use Search often, disabling this indexing can help you make your Windows 7 faster.
To do so, right-click on the hard drive, select the Properties option and then click on the General tab. Uncheck the box next to the Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed…option. A new dialog box will pop up. Just choose the Apply changes to drive C:\, subfolders and files option and click on the Ok button. Wait for a few minutes while Windows 7 makes the necessary changes.
- Disable Visual Effects
You can also crank the Windows 7 appearance down to increase your computer speed. To do so, right-click on the My Computer icon and select the Properties option. Once the System window pops up, click on the Advanced System Settings at the left side. Now, a System Properties dialog box will launch. Click on the Settings button under the Performance section. Finally, choose the option that reads Adjust for best performance and click on the Ok button.
