Born on 23 August 1954 to an Indian Father & Malay mother, Halimah binti Yacob was brought up single-handedly by her mother after early death of her father. She had received her early education from Singapore Chinese Girls’ School and TanjongKatong Girls’ School. She earned her graduation degree in Law from University of Singaporeand later was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the National University of Singapore in 2017.

She started her career in 1978 as the legal officer in National Trades Union Congress& eventually became the director of its legal services department in 1992. She stepped into politics during 2001 at the advice of then-Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong and was elected as an MP for the Jurong Group Representation Constituency (GRC). In 2011 general elections, she was given the post of Minister of State at the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports. She went on to become the Minister of State at the Ministry of Social and Family Development in 2012 following a cabinet reshuffle.

In 2013, she was elected as the Speaker of Parliament and was the first woman to hold this post in the country’s history. In 2015 general elections, she was co-appointed as the Central Executive Committee of People’s Action Party group and was the only minority candidate for this group.

In 2017, she stepped down from the position of Speaker of Parliament and MP of Marsiling-Yew Tee to contest for the Presidential position. Fortunately, Halimah became the only one out of three prospective candidates to receive an eligibility certificate for this year’s Presidential Election and hence, was elected as the President.
